Switching to Firefox - I'm going to do it

I've been playing with Firefox on and off for a while. There's so many reasons to want to switch, but I had some gripes which were preventing me from making the move. After a bit of searching I think I've found some Extensions to address my gripes.

One of the things I haven't mentioned in this list is that iNotes/Domino Web Access is not yet certified to run with Firefox. I hope this changes soon, but at the moment I'm able to use a proper Notes client most of the time, and if I can't then I'm likely to be on a remote site somewhere, and they'll probably have IE there anyway.. either way, it's not a big deal right now.

Anyway, here's some info on the extensions:

1. Closing tabs

By default you can use CTRL-W to close a tab, or right click and select close tab. I find this kind of annoying. As a Notes user, I want to be able to use escape, or right double click to close the window. The escape option is probably not going to work too well in the browser world, but this extension lets you Double click to close a tab (or you could also get it from his home page). It is mainly intended to be used via left double clicks, but it does work with right ones too (however the right click brings up the context menu). There's also another extension I need to check out, which is Tabbrowser Extensions, it looks like it does similar things, and so I'll compare the two when I get the time.

2. Tabbed browsing ALL THE TIME!

If I'm going to use tabbed browsing, then damnit I want to use tabbed browsing all the time - I don't ever want a new Window spawned unless I manually choose this to be the case. I was thinking why I wanted my browser to behave this way, and I rationalise it like this - there are times when I want to manually choose to open a new tab, but otherwise I'll want to let the developers choice guide me when navigating a site. Without using something like the Single Window extension, I'd need to either open every link manually in a new tab, or have new windows pop up all over the place. Take weblogs for example - most of the time I'd want to navigate those in the same tab/window, as they usually always have an easy way to get back to the front page. However when the developer/author/webmaster/whatever wants to link to an external site, and chooses to do so by opening a new window, I want to remain faithful to that browsing experience, but have it in a tab instead.

This Single Window Browsing extension will do that *most* of the time. Ironically, the first thing I found which it doesn't work with is the 'Extensions / Get More Extensions' option within Firefox itself! Everything else seems to work pretty nicely.

My only other concern was that FlashGet integration seemed a bit flaky. However I've noticed a couple of other extensions which look like they'll duplicate most of its functionality, so I might need to take some timeout and investigate them.

# Switching to Firefox - I'm going to do it

Day 1 - holy shit this rocks. Firefox with the Single Window extension works sooooo well combined with Trillians RSS reader. I can make a single pass of all my RSS feeds, clicking anything that looks interesting, and then process the opened tabs left to right (rand then of course using right double click to close the window in true Notes style afterwards).

...and of course Lotus Notes is quite happy to work with Firefox, and fortunately the Single Window plugin also detects and traps links launched from Notes.. yay!
