Starting with this week's (still pending, should be by Friday) release of Domino 6.5.4, the Domino Utility Server adds two new entitlements. IBM customers who purchase Lotus Domino Utility Server (and only Utility Server) will be entitled to use IBM Lotus Workflow and IBM Lotus Domino Document Manager. The use is consistent with the existing terms of the Utility Server license (Notes client must be purchased separately; no Domino CALs required; etc.). This news leaked out a couple of weeks ago, but now that it's official, I'm happy to confirm it.
I don't actually know anyone who's had to run Utility server, the whole no individual mail file thing rules out a lot of people quite quickly, but looking at the ability to run without needing individual CALs for web users starts opening up a few more options for the product.
Chris Miller asks what was my next question too - is Domino.Doc web access only these days? Last time I saw it (which was a while back), it seemed very much to be integrated into the Windows environment - ie, snap ins to the File / Save dialogboxes for apps like Word etc etc. If they've made it more viable over the web then it could definately be worth looking into. If it really is a viable web document management system, then it could combine very nicely with Domino utility server and it's lack of requirement for Domino CALs as a product which could be sold to any environment, regardless of your current mail system.
Ed's post also made me realise a slightly embarassing fact, I haven't actually got around to looking at any of the Lotus Workflow product offerings yet. I'm going to try to grab something from Partnerworld today and take a peek.
